Susan Schildkamp creates in her drawings and paintings scenes between waking and dreaming. She works out images she encounters on her way. This can be everywhere and anywhere. She captures landscapes, people, houses, buildings, objects and last but not least atmospheres. This can be an atmosphere she recognizes, an atmosphere that amazes her; something that gets hold of her.
Landscape
For the past few years the real landscape has brought her into temptation. Many of her paintings are created in the country. In her studio starts the abstraction, the simplifying of the image she has found outside. Her own experience and the way in which she sees the essence of things predominate the objective observation.
Atmosphere
Specific to Susan Schildkamps works is that she repeats what she has drawn before in a subtle way. In one of her next paintings suddenly an atmosphere of old times, an element of an earlier work appears. How much she depends on the unhindered becomes clear from a few repetitive landscapes: at the coast and in the mountains are reappearing scenes. Yet recently we see more realistic elements in her paintings: houses rolling along with the wind, a tower that appears to have fallen from the sky, a fairground horse floating above the water.
Controling the picture
At the same time she makes the landscape fade away. Sometimes the top resembles the sky and the bottom the sea. In this sense her work is both abstract and realistic in terms. And there is no contrast; it is completely unshaded. This not only indicates the mastery of the image.
Colour
She has always yield to the hard grip of the light. In her case a threatening sky is also a bright blue. Susan Schildkamp succeeds in giving a recognizable dismal, the undertone of life, colour. Susan Schildkamp slaagt er steeds weer in om herkenbare triestigheden, de ondertoon van het leven, kleur te geven. There is hardly anything dark in it.
